XIAOMI LAUNCHES MI MIX ALPHA

Beijing, CHINA, September 24 2019 –– Global technology leader Xiaomi today announced the release of Mi MIX Alpha concept smartphone. Mi MIX Alpha is a result of Xiaomi’s bold imagination for the future of phones in the 5G era.

Mi MIX Alpha showcases an innovative Surround Screen with a screen-to-body ratio of more than 180.6%. The device features the world’s first 108MP camera, and is crafted with a one-of-a-kind combination of titanium alloy, ceramics and sapphire to make for a revolutionary concept phone.

Xiaomi’s Mi MIX exploration began in 2016 when the company introduced the revolutionary Full Screen Display smartphone concept — an industry first. It was also Mi MIX that pioneered a smartphone screen ratio exceeding the standard 16:9 aspect ratio. Today, full screen displays have become the standard configuration of smartphones.

Since its debut, the Mi MIX series has represented innovation at its finest as Xiaomi sought to reimagine the modern day smartphone. In addition to the Full Screen Display, Mi MIX also embraced cantilever piezoelectric ceramics acoustic technology, ultrasonic proximity sensor, and revolutionary build materials.

World’s first Surround Display – display almost on all sides

Carrying the original Mi MIX exploration spirit, when Mi MIX Alpha lights up – the front, side, and back of the phone are almost entirely display. The Surround Display allows Mi MIX Alpha to achieve a screen-to-body ratio that reaches an astonishing 180.6%.

Behind the Surround Display is a series of groundbreaking technologies that required a new method of device assembly. Unlike traditional smartphone assembly methods, Mi MIX Alpha’s internal assembly is first carried out, while its display layer, touch panel, and protection layers are laminated one-by-one. All display component layers are compiled in that order to achieve high curvature Surround Display design, so the internal stress caused by bending the display layers can be released layer by layer. To achieve a smooth and flat surface, Mi MIX Alpha also uses a durable protective layer which optimizes the screen stack structure.

To accommodate the nearly all-screen offering, Mi MIX Alpha has minimal bezels on the top and bottom, and ditches the physical side buttons altogether. A brand-new display acoustic technology replaces the traditional earpiece receiver and proximity sensor while the device’s sides are pressure-sensitive and leverage a linear motor to simulate the touch of real buttons.

108MP camera world debut – another milestone for smartphone photography

Mi MIX Alpha features a 108MP camera with the highest resolution, highest pixel count, and the largest sensor found in any smartphone ever – marking another important milestone in smartphone photography.

The main 108MP camera sports a 1/1.33-inch large sensor –  389% larger than the 48MP camera. This image sensor is capable of producing 108MP photos with a resolution of 12032 x 9024 pixels and supports four-in-one Super Pixel to produce large 1.6μm pixels under low-light conditions. The camera also supports new technologies such as ISOCELL Plus and smart ISO, and is equipped with four-axis optical image stabilization (OIS) to ensure stable videos.

In addition to the 108MP camera, Mi MIX Alpha also has a 20MP ultra wide-angle camera which supports 1.5 cm super macro photography, and a 12MP telephoto camera that supports 2x optical zoom and Dual PD focus.

Luxurious titanium smartphone with 5G flagship performance

In addition to its innovative Surround Display, Mi MIX Alpha’s top and bottom parts of the frame are built with aerospace-grade titanium alloy. The alloy is three times stronger than stainless steel but weighs less. On its back, the entire protective cover for the camera area uses a single piece of sapphire glass, which is embedded in ceramic.

On the performance front, Mi MIX Alpha uses the same flagship-grade Snapdragon 855+ mobile SoC as the Mi 9 Pro 5G and supports 5G bands of the three major carriers in Mainland China. The device also features the top-tier 12GB+512GB memory and storage combination, and supports UFS3.0. Mi MIX Alpha is equipped with a 4050mAh battery and comes with a standard 40W wired fast charge.

The mission of Mi MIX concept smartphone is to make a truly disruptive product without considering the costs and return, and without considering mass production. Xiaomi aims to start small-scale production for Mi MIX Alpha at the end of December and retails at RMB 19,999.

Xiaomi announces world’s first 30W wireless charging technology

Beijing, CHINA, September 9, 2019 – Xiaomi today introduced the world’s first 30W fast wireless charging device, part of the four wireless charging breakthroughs that include so far the highest power reverse-charging capabilities, which Mi 9 Pro 5G will sport at its upcoming launch.

The company also brought two new wireless charging accessories, and announced the forming of a wireless charging alliance with leading companies across industries, in an effort to further promote wireless charging in everyday life settings.

In addition, the global technology leader revealed that its 40W wireless charging technology is already in test, aimed at spearheading in innovations in charging technologies and empowering the 5G era.

Four major innovations in wireless charging

Xiaomi is pleased to announce four technological innovations in the field of wireless charging, including an efficient 4:1 direct-charge architecture, high power wireless reverse-charging technology, a more secure and stable dual band transmission technology, and a universal combination of wired OTG reverse-charging and high-power wireless reverse-charging – all providing a higher efficiency for wireless charging in all kinds of scenes.

Compared to our previous 20W wireless charging 2:1 direct-charge architecture, the new 4:1 direct-charge architecture utilizes two levels of charge pump voltage reduction. This new architecture further improves efficiency while reducing the heat produced during charging, making it the best single-battery direct charge technology on the market right now. 30W Fan-cooled Wireless Charging Stand can charge your 4000mAh battery from zero to 50% in about 25 minutes, and 100% in 69 minutes.

High-power wireless reverse charging utilizes BOOST combined with a 1:2 reverse charge pump. Voltage doubles to achieve a maximum power of 10W, which is twice that of the 5W reverse charging power solution offered in the current market. At the same time, this technology also included seven protection measurements, such as over-current and over-voltage protection, to ensure the wireless reverse charge is safe and reliable.

The brand new dual band transmission technology also utilizes Bluetooth. Compared to the communication protocol of the original Qi standard, which combines data and power transmissions, the dual band transmission technology separates the power transmission from the data communication. It also uses the mobile device’s Bluetooth function to transmit data, greatly reducing the chance of disconnecting while in wireless charging mode and improving stability, with some additional benefits like transmitting time and battery percentage information between devices.

The soon arriving Mi 9 Pro 5G supports four types of charging: wired fast charging, wireless flash charging, wired OTG reverse charging and wireless reverse charging. This combination enables you to charge your devices whenever, and wherever. For example, when your phone is using wired fast charging, you can also use its wireless reverse charging functionality to charge other phones or earphones that support wireless charging; or supply power to other devices through wired OTG while it is using wireless flash charging.

Brand new charging accessories to popularize wireless charging

Xiaomi introduced two new wireless charging accessories – 30W Fan-cooled Wireless Charging Stand and 20W Smart Tracking Wireless Charging Pad.

The 30W Fan-cooled Wireless Charging Stand sports an ergonomic design, allowing for optimal viewing and operating while charging wirelessly. It also features a vertical air duct design that allows the air outlet to blow directly to the phone to reduce obstructions, improve heat dissipation and reduce the dust trapped in the air duct.

The 20W Smart Tracking Wireless Charging Pad elevates the wireless charging experience by automatically tracking and aligning its charging coils to a user’s smartphone. Its brand new dual band transmission technology displays the receiving smartphone’s charging status and time while charging wirelessly.

Xiaomi leads the charging industry trend

In recent years, Xiaomi has continuously made many breakthroughs in the high-efficiency charging field for both wired and wireless technology. In regards to wired charging, after Mi 3 and Mi 5 first supported QC 2.0/3.0 fast charge certification, Mi 9 first supported 27W fast charge, and also demonstrated the 100W super fast charge technology with full charge of 4000mAh battery under 17 minutes.

In the wireless charging field, Xiaomi has continued to gain even more momentum with Mi MIX 2S being the first domestic mobile phone to support wireless charging. Mi Wireless Charging Pad released at only RMB 99 greatly reduces the cost of wireless charging for customers, while Mi MIX 3 further increases the wireless charging power to 10W.

Mi 9’s 20W wireless charging is still the highest powered wireless charging solution in the industry, and has also received safe wireless charging certification 2.0 from TÜV Rheinland in Germany. Various wireless charging accessories such as Mi Wireless Power Bank and Mi Wireless Car Charger will further bring wireless charging to the masses for increased consumption in everyday life.

Xiaomi is a drafting member of two China’s national wireless charging standards, a member in the WPC Wireless Charging Alliance, and has obtained dozens of patents in the wireless charging field. An even higher-powered 40W Xiaomi high-efficiency wireless flash charging technology is already in the testing phase.

With the arrival of the 5G era, where transmission modes are to be transformed, wireless charging will become the industrial trend and eventually replace the current wired charging technology. While the ultimate goal is to provide an accessible and seamless charging experience, Xiaomi, along with its smart home brand “Mi Jia”, has teamed up with several industry leaders to form a wireless charging alliance. The new alliance will further expand and integrate wireless charging into everyday life scenarios. The on-the-go charging experience will bring convenience to all and change the way of living, as well as accelerate the evolution of wireless charging while embracing the 5G era.

Xiaomi Holds MIDC Indonesia Conference to Support Local Developers

Jakarta, 4 September 2019 – MIDC (Xiaomi Developer Conference) was held in Jakarta, Indonesia. The event attracted a large number of local start-ups and individual developers who came to share their ideas on how to build the local Internet ecosystem and improve Internet services. With Indonesia being a key overseas market for Xiaomi, Xiaomi’s Android-based OS MIUI has more than 24 million monthly active users here. MIDC Indonesia focused on highlighting the advantages of working within the Xiaomi ecosystem and empowering local developers.

Massive Resources to Support Developers Promoting Apps

The biggest challenge a developer faces when launching a new app is gaining traction and getting ahead of the competitors. In addition to Google Play, Mi App Store gives the developers a new platform to promote their products. Ivonne Li, the head of Mi App Store, said that the global distribution of apps on this platform has already exceeded 220 billion. After one year in Indonesia, Mi App Store has 1.7 million daily active users, showing 170% growth compared to last year. App developers can enjoy traffic bonuses and multiple strategies of app promotion offered by the platform. For example, Ciayo, a comic reader app from Indonesia, also achieved 100 times growth. In the second half of this year, Mi App Store (now rebranded as GetApps) launched the “Seagull Project” which will focus on investing resources with a total value of Rp 200.000.000.000 to support local developers and start-ups through giving awards, featuring apps on the start page, publishing reviews, giving editorial recommendations, and holding events all of which will help build a new Internet ecosystem beneficial to all its participants.
The leading eCommerce platform in Southeast Asia Lazada has benefited from Xiaomi’s GetApps, with Xiaomi as one of the top three smartphone brand partners contributing to Lazada app downloads.

Empowering Global Game Developers

As the productivity and specifications of mobile devices continue to increase, the high-performance Xiaomi phones are becoming new favorites for mobile gaming. Moreover, mobile gaming today is a market that shows incredible growth potential. According to Robin Zheng, the Head of Mi Global Game Publishing Team at Xiaomi, “There are 71.66 million daily active users of Xiaomi phones who are gamers, with an average of 6.65 million new users added daily. An average gaming session on a mobile phone for each user lasts 27 minutes.”

Supporting high-quality users is something that allows Xiaomi to achieve these impressive numbers. In order to allow more users to enjoy games, Xiaomi has established an innovative game distribution strategy which combines traditional promotion channels (Google Play and App Store) with Xiaomi’s platforms and integrated payment and monetization solutions. Mint Games, a one-stop distribution lab for casual and indie games has been launched by Xiaomi as well. Handing over games to this platform allows the developers to transition from business development to profitability in an easy and seamless way.

Ideal Cloud Platform Helping Start-ups

Building a good app today is inseparable from the support of cloud services. Kingsoft Cloud Services have always been an important part of the Xiaomi ecosystem. Kingsoft provides IaaS infrastructure that support the upper-level PaaS and SaaS apps. According to Tao Yu, General Manager of Solution Center Kingsoft Cloud, their services cover 100 countries and regions around the world, and over 150,000 enterprises and developers have used Kingsoft’s cloud service products or solutions. Throughout the years, Kingsoft Cloud has always understood the needs of small and medium-sized start-ups. Reliable and cost-efficient cloud solutions greatly reduce the expenses for young companies. Expanding its services overseas, Kingsoft Cloud is keen to work with local developers and will provide cloud service experience vouchers worth $299 for start-ups and developers stationed in Kingsoft Cloud.

Xiaomi and Samsung jointly announce 64MP camera and 100MP camera sensor

Beijing, CHINA, August 7, 2019 – Xiaomi and Samsung Electronics today launched an ultra-high resolution 64MP camera technology, which the Redmi product line will be the first to adopt. The two global technology leaders also jointly announced that they will bring the first-of-its-kind 100MP camera sensor, featuring the highest pixel count and resolution on the market.

Samsung’s 64MP debuts on Xiaomi’s product line

The 64MP Samsung ISOCELL GW1 sensor has high resolving power and uses a remosaic algorithm to produce ultra-clear 64MP shots in bright conditions. With the pixel-merging Tetracell technology, GW1 also delivers bright 16MP images under low-light conditions. Even when the print resolution is 72dpi, it is able to print a large, high quality poster up to 3.26 meters in height. The 1/1.7-inch image sensor is one of the largest so far on the market, ringing in 34% larger than the standard 48MP smartphone cameras seen on typical flagship devices.

Samsung’s GW1 sensor also adopts ISOCELL Plus technology, which replaces the original metal barrier formed over photodiodes with an innovative new material, minimizing optical loss and light reflection. It’s also equipped with a Dual Conversion Gain (DCG) technology, which converts light into an electric signal based on the ambient lighting conditions. Hence, under brighter conditions it uses a low ISO, and under dim ones it leverages a high ISO to achieve an optimal signal-to-noise ratio in the resulting photographs.

Xiaomi and Samsung jointly launch the world’s first 100MP sensor

Xiaomi debuts Samsung’s 100MP sensor to offer smartphones with ultra high-resolution cameras. The 108MP sensor surpasses the 100MP mark for the first time ever in smartphone image sensors. It is also the world’s highest-resolution smartphone camera sensor, capable of producing photos with a resolution of 12032 x 9024 pixels.

Photographers can not only take more detailed photos, but also make better use of their imagination and creativity with this sensor. The 100MP ultra high-resolution camera sensor even maintains a high-quality picture of 27MP in 2x zoom – more than doubling the pixels of a standard 12MP telephoto camera.

Moreover, Samsung’s 100MP sensor will be the largest smartphone image sensor offered on the market. The notable sensor size enables an ultra-high light input to deliver stellar images in low-light environments.

Xiaomi’s continuous innovations and advancements in imaging technology

These latest innovations are a testament to Xiaomi’s ongoing dedication to imaging excellence. Throughout Xiaomi’s smartphone photography journey, our camera features – such as Mi 5’s 4-axis optical image stabilization and Mi 6’s dual camera with optical zoom – have gleaned notable traction and praise from users and Mi Fans around the globe.

In 2018, Xiaomi’s Camera Department was formally established, with team members across the world, to focus on conducting research and development for imaging technology. Since then, Xiaomi has achieved major accomplishments in the imaging space:

  • Mi MIX 2S appeared on DxOMark’s rankings
  • Mi 8 ranked fourth in the world on DxOMark’s photo ranking at launch
  • In early 2019, Redmi Note 7 featured the world’s first 48MP camera, and was the first sub-$200 device equipped with a flagship sensor
  • Mi 9, featuring a triple-camera setup with 48MP ultra-wide angle main camera, ranked third in the world on DxOMark during its release, while its video imagery ranked first at launch

Strong AI research and development capabilities contribute to the advancements of Xiaomi’s imaging technology. According to the statistics by the Nikkei Business News, Xiaomi’s AI-related patent applications ranks 11th in the world. Xiaomi’s AI algorithm team, comprised of over 1,000 people, has continuously developed new innovative camera functions, and launched the well-received AI night scene mode, 960fps slow-motion capture, AI motion tracking and AI Skyscaping.
