Xiaomi announces Mi CC9 smartphone series

The Mi CC9 series introduces a trendsetting 32MP front + 48MP rear camera setup to empower global creators
Mi CC9 Meitu Edition offers a revolutionary selfie portrait experience
Devices are available from RMB 1299

Beijing, CHINA, July 2 2019 –– Global technology leader Xiaomi has announced three new smartphones – Mi CC9, Mi CC9e and Mi CC9 Meitu Edition – under its new Mi CC series. Designed to deliver the exceptional photography experience younger generations crave, Mi CC9 series’s flagship camera configuration features a 32MP front camera and 48MP rear camera. Devices are equipped with the latest generation in-screen fingerprint sensor and a large 4030mAh battery, and can be purchased from RMB 1299.

Flagship design with contemporary features

Mi CC9 leverages the exceptional manufacturing processes used to develop Mi 9, and maintains the same comfortable hand-feel with a curved glass back. The new series also makes use of Mi 9’s 6.39-inch FHD+ AMOLED display and screen-to-body ratio of up to 91 percent.

Mi CC9 comes in three trendy colors, White Lover, Blue Planet and Dark Prince –– all of which produce a 3D effect. White Lover resembles light glistening on the surface of snow, refracting holographic colors in various angles. Blue Planet has a unique “CC” pattern, which is enabled by an even more complex nano-technology manufacturing process, causing the phone’s surface to resemble moonlight shimmering on the ocean.

The new series adopts a vertical logo and has a multi-color LED light on its back cover. In addition to acting as a notification LED, the hue light also supports unique light effects for games and can also pulse along to your favorite music.

The devices are equipped with the latest in-screen fingerprint sensor technologies — with faster unlock speed and a higher success recognition rate — as well as low-blue-light eye protection certification by Germany’s VDE Testing and Certification Institute.  Mi CC9 also includes hardware DC tuning which ensures color retention while eliminating flickering under low light environment.

Industry-leading 32MP selfies, introducing brand new Mimoji feature

Mi CC9’s front camera uses a Samsung 32MP flagship sensor and merges four pixels to form large 1.6μm pixels and ultimately capture more details in low-light conditions. Meanwhile, AI beautify mode optimizations were applied to retain users’ facial features and avoid over-editing.

The device’s front camera supports palm shutter, as well as panorama selfies by merging three selfie photos in one to fit even more people in a group photo. Xiaomi also introduced a brand new Mimoji feature, that lets you use the front camera to produce cute cartoon photos and animations up to 15s.

Sony 48MP ultra-wide triple camera, all-new AI Skyscaping

At the back, Mi CC9 sports a triple camera setup with 48MP flagship main lens and a large 1/2” sensor for super clear 48MP ultra-high resolution day shots and uses 1.6μm 4-in-1 Super Pixel to capture more light for bright night shots.

Mi CC9 intelligently detects when architectural or group shots are taken and recommends if users should switch to ultra wide-angle mode for a more optimal image. With built-in AI distortion correction enabled, the device also corrects image distortion automatically.

For an even more optimal photography experience, users can leverage the all-new AI Skyscaping feature, which accurately detects the sky within the photo and can transform an overcast day to a bright sunny day or even a breathtaking sunset. This innovation was made possible by Mi AI Lab which used deep learning to analyze over 100,000 images of skies.

Dual turbo technologies, 4030mAh high-capacity battery

Powered by Snapdragon 710 mobile platform, Mi CC9 offers fast speed, excellent performance, and long battery life. Mi Turbo optimizes system performance, enabling the system to run smoothly even after prolonged usage and increases app launch time by 20%. Gaming enthusiasts will also be eager to deploy Game Turbo 2.0 which offers color enhancement by increasing contrast when playing in dark environments.

Despite its slim form factor, Mi CC9 packs a high capacity 4030mAh battery combined with power-saving features to accommodate up to two days of regular usage. The device is even equipped with multi-functional NFC, Hi-Res audio, 3.5mm headphone jack, and an IR blaster.

Mi CC9e: A compact Mi CC 9 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 debut

Mi CC9e takes on a smaller form compared to the Mi 9 CC, with a 6.088-inch screen and a high-capacity 4030mAh battery. Given its compact size, the weight and thickness are reduced to 173.8g and 8.475mm respectively, making it ideal for single-hand operation.

While compact, Mi CC9e still packs flagship-level specifications, including the ultra-clear 32-megapixel selfie camera, 48-megapixel rear triple camera, an updated in-screen fingerprint sensor, cutting-edge front audio system, and a 3.5mm jack.

Mi CC9e also debuts Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 665 mobile platform. It boasts great power efficiency with the 11nm LPP process technology and Vulkan 1.1 API, and improves AI performance significantly.

These top of the line specs are a true testament to Xiaomi’s commitment to delivering outstanding products at honest pricing for everyone.

Mi CC9 Meitu Edition: Made for selfie lovers

Mi CC9 Meitu Edition takes on a one-of-a-kind gradient color, reminiscent of the famous beaches of the Bahamas. Made with selfie lovers in mind, the smartphone features a highly-customized UI theme and ringtone that vibes with its holographic back cover.

Meitu Edition comes with the same hardware configurations – a front 32-megapixel selfie camera and a 48-megapixel triple camera setup. The main difference is the Meitu camera optimization, which capitalizes on all Meitu camera features and video editing capabilities to achieve a resulting image that is natural yet boasts great detail.

The highlight of Mi CC9 Meitu Edition is its unique AI low-light portrait feature that allows users to take beautiful, high-quality portraits in almost zero ambient light. This feature uses Meitu’s unique AI beautify technology and Meitu’s single frame depth acquisition technology to accommodate a wide variety of scenes. Even under extreme low-light conditions where it is difficult to see, the device can still extract facial features and produce a brilliantly detailed selfie thanks to depth acquisition technology.

Mi CC9 Meitu Edition also comes with a superior AI Beautify feature that supports zero-level microdermabrasion for a more natural looking photo. It also solves common problems faced while taking photos, such as accidental eye blinks or shots taken when eyes are closed.

Mi CC9e 4GB+64GB, 6GB+64GB, 6GB+128GB variants will be available for RMB RMB 1299, RMB 1399, and RMB 1599 respectively

Mi CC9 6GB+64GB variant retails at RMB 1799, and 6GB+128GB variant for RMB 1999.

Mi CC9 Meitu Edition 8GB+256GB retails at RMB 2599.

Preorders for Mi CC9 and Mi CC9 Meitu Edition will start tonight at 10pm, and open sales will start on July 5, 2019 at 10am through official Xiaomi channels in Chinese Mainland. Mi CC9e will be available on July 9, 2019.

Humble Brag Alert: Our Phones are so Beautiful, They Belong in a Museum

The rapid evolution of smartphones has created high expectations for that ‘wow factor’ moment with each new device. That’s why other than better performance, global players have been striving to achieve innovative design, such as better materials, and thinner bezels.

The release of our first generation Mi MIX, followed by its successor, Mi MIX 2, sparked a “wow” across the world.

Our Mi MIX phones combine modern day minimalist design with traditional ceramic craftsmanship. Designed in collaboration with renowned French designer Philippe Starck, the MIX series has given everyone a glimpse at what a true “full-screen display” is — making sure your attention is fully focused on the screen and that there are no distractions.

Mi MIX 2 is also a mix of east and west, of the past and the future, reflected in the design choices in terms of materials. While ceramic is a material that has been worked on by potters since predynastic times, it is also a material that is applied in one of the most high-tech industries: the semiconductor industry. We have over 1000 high-tech components housed inside an ancient material. The mix of elements, seamlessly merging old and new, is a challenge but is also where the beauty of Mi MIX 2 lies.

We are honored that these unique design elements have been recognized by some of the world’s most prestigious design awards and museums: National Design Museum in Finland, Center Pompidou in France, and Die Neue Sammlung -the Design Museum in Germany, in some cases, marking the first time a phone has been added to their permanent collection.

We can say our phones are so beautiful, they are a work of art!

August 2017- IDEA Gold Award

Mi MIX won the 2017 IDEA Gold Award, given to only 25 entries out from 1600 products submitted from around the world, which means there is a winning rate of 1.5%. Presented by IDSA, the Industrial Designers Society of America, IDEA (International Design Excellence Awards) recognizes design excellence in product design across the globe.

September 2017- Collected by National Design Museum in Finland

Mi MIX has been collected by the National Design Museum in Finland, marking the first time a Chinese smartphone has been included in the museum’s collection. Jukka Savolainen, curator of the museum, praised Mi MIX as a leader in design trends for future smartphones.

October 2017 – Good Design Award

With a history of nearly 70 years, the Good Design Award is a prestigious global award for excellent design innovation. Mi MIX won the 2017 Good Design Award, presented to 1403 entries from 4495 products submitted from around the world.

December 2017- Added to the permanent collection of Center Pompidou

Mi MIX and Mi MIX 2 have been added to the permanent collection of Centre Pompidou, one of the world’s most popular art museums. This is the first time that a Chinese consumer electronics product has been added to the museum’s collection, and is a testament to Xiaomi’s relentless exploration in design and innovation.

January 2018 – iF Design Award

Mi MIX and Mi MIX 2 won the 2017 iF Design Award. This world renowned design competition received more than 6,400 entries from 54 applicants across the globe, and the 1,000 winners were chosen by a panel of 63 design experts from all over the world.

February 2018, Die Neue Sammlung

Most recently, Mi MIX 2 has been added to the collection of Die Neue Sammlung, the Design Museum in Germany. Founded nearly a century ago, the time-honored design museum has a large collection of industrial and product design.

Xiaomi Smart TVs Make Their Mark

For many people, a smart TV is the hub of their entertainment and smart home. A smart TV allows users to cut the cord and enjoy limitless on-demand Internet content. Today, smart TVs are growing in popularity and preference across the globe, with most of the world’s major TV manufacturers making smart TVs.

Xiaomi established its Mi TV team in 2012, with the ambition of “building the world’s best smart TVs that everyone can afford” in accordance with the company’s core value to offer consumers high-quality and well-designed products at accessible prices.

Back then, during an internal meeting, Lei Jun, our founder and CEO, told the team that because the company has already put a great number of small screens in people’s hands through Xiaomi’s successful smartphone series, there was now an opportunity to put larger screens in people’s homes. We therefore set out to create smart TVs that followed our product philosophy of being  as user-friendly and as “smart” as possible. Other than delivering Internet services, our TVs also act as a hub for our wide array of smart home products.

Wang Chuan, our co-founder who leads Mi TV operations, has deep experience in the TV industry and we were fortunate he was able to bring this expertise and understanding of hardware and supply chains to Xiaomi.

Despite this, it was a challenging start for our Mi TV team. Wang Chuan recalled his experience of visiting nine suppliers in eight cities within five days. Additionally, the TV engineers had to stay at the factories for three months to make sure that the entire manufacturing process met our strict standards. Their hard work finally paid off as Mi TV has become the fastest growing TV brand in China in 2017, even amid an overall market downturn. In fact, in last September and October, Mi TV was named the bestselling smart TV brand on Tmall and JD, China’s leading e-commerce platforms.

Innovation, the key to our success

Wang Chuan attributes Mi TV’s success to our relentless exploration for innovation. The Mi TV includes multiple innovative features including:

11-key remote control

Our first TV product, Mi TV 1, running on our MIUI system, was announced in September 2013, bringing a simplified smart TV interface and the innovative 11-key remote control.

Remote controls used to come with dozens of keys, easily confusing consumers. We solved this pain point by removing unused keys, simplifying the user experience.

Independent soundbar

Mi TV 2, which was announced in 2014, came with an independent soundbar with nine built-in speakers and a subwoofer, which significantly improved sound quality while watching movies or playing games.

Innovative modular design

Mi TV 3 was crafted with a modular design approach when launched in 2015, redefining the 60-inch 4K TV industry in China. It was separated into two parts: a 60-inch LG true 4K display and the Mi TV Bar, which incorporates the motherboard, Mi Box content and a world-class independent sound system. As the Mi TV Bar could be paired with any screen that has a HDMI port, with a Mi Port-to-HDMI cable, users could simply purchase a Mi TV Bar if they wanted to upgrade their old TV for a much lower cost than changing the entire TV set.

The content first PatchWall system

Besides making updates on the hardware, “content first” has always been our Mi TV team’s guiding theme. Mi TV has become China’s largest TV content hub by partnering with the country’s top video websites including iQiyi, Tencent Video, Sohu Video, and PPTV.

We reached another milestone in September 2016, at the launch event of Mi TV 3S, where we announced our own AI TV system PatchWall, which truly amplifies the content and user experience. It can predict content based on what users have watched to provide more accurate recommendations through deep learning, and feature users’ favorite on the homepage.

PatchWall proved to be a big hit in China’s smart TV market, winning awards including “the best TV OS in 2016”.

Voice control

Furthering our TV’s position as the hub of the smart home, we announced the Mi TV 4A in March 2017. This model integrates voice commands to PatchWall, so users can verbally tell their Mi TVs to search for a particular movie. They can also ask their TVs to control connected Mi Ecosystem products, such as a Mi Air Purifier and a Mi Robot Vacuum.

Designs

We’re always exploring ways to improve our craftsmanship, and it’s been noticed by our fans and industry alike. Mi TV 3 has won the world-renowned Red Dot Award 2016 for its design, and now Mi TV 4 offers the world’s first 4.9 mm, super slim body which is almost frameless.

“Today, I think we’ve reached our goal and all the hard work has truly paid off,” said Wang Chuan, who couldn’t help but get emotional during the launch event for Mi TV 4 in May 2017.

And Lei Jun, who had been waiting quietly in a backstage VIP room, was ready to give Wang and the Mi TV team his warmest congratulations.

After crossing RMB 100B revenue milestone, a new journey for Xiaomi begins in 2018

This is Lei Jun‘s letter to all employees at our year-end gala, our most important annual event.

Dear Xiaomi colleagues,

Happy New Year!

2017 has been an extraordinary year for Xiaomi. It was a “turnaround year”, but more importantly a “leapfrog year” — a critical year in breaking new ground for our future as we embark on a new journey.

  1. Crossing the RMB 100B revenue threshold

In October 2017, we exceeded the revenue goal of RMB 100 billion set at the beginning of the year. I checked — and found out that to achieve this milestone, Apple took 20 years, Facebook took 12 years, Google took nine years, Alibaba took 17 years, Tencent took 17 years, Huawei took 21 years.

Xiaomi has taken only slightly over seven years. We are very likely to enter the Fortune Global 500 list of companies this year.

  1. Three reasons for the successful rebound in smartphone sales

Due to the improvement of our turnover capabilities, our global shipments have improved significantly since Q2 2017 — Xiaomi is back in the top 5 smartphone brands. As per IDC, we have become the world’s #4 smartphone brand in Q4 2017 in terms of shipments. Even with the overall smartphone market declining 6.3%, we managed to maintain a year-on-year growth of 96.9% — Xiaomi was the only brand with continuous growth, demonstrating the support and recognition we received from our users.

How did Xiaomi achieve this turnaround? This is because we use a telescope to look at innovation, and a microscope to examine product quality. Innovation determines how high we can fly, while product quality determines how far we can go.

1) Relentless pursuit of technology innovations, release of Surge S1 and leading the smartphone industry with Mi MIX 2

Xiaomi is driven by an engineering culture and innovation is in our DNA. In 2017 we grew from focusing our innovations on single products to a more systematic approach.

Early last year, Xiaomi launched our first chipset Surge S1 and successfully put it into mass production. We became the fourth company in the world with the ability to design and manufacture both chipsets and smartphones.

In Q3 last year, we launched Mi MIX 2, becoming a leader in the full screen display era, while the industry continues to follow this trend closely. It is the first time a Chinese consumer technology industry is leading the world’s evolution of technology.

Meanwhile, we’ve built the world’s biggest IoT platform with many advanced smart devices in our ecosystem and continuous investment in cloud services. We are also among the first to launch AI products in China.

So far, we have applied for more than 24,000 patents globally with 5920 of them granted, among which half are global patents.

2) Firm focus on quality, showing significant improvement

Quality is the lifeline of our company’s development. In early 2017, Xiaomi set up its Quality Control Committee with me as chairman. The quality of Xiaomi’s products and services is the most important mission of the company and we will improve product quality regardless of cost.

After a year’s efforts, our quality has improved significantly based on our original standards and these efforts have been widely recognized. Recently, Xiaomi was among the top ten in the “Made in China 2025” quality award, and I was also honored to receive a Quality personality award and was elected as Deputy Chairman of the China Quality Committee.

3) Rapid growth in our global business, with Xiaomi becoming #1 in India and global markets flourishing

We are present in 70 countries and regions so far globally and became top five in 16 markets. India is an extraordinary example. According to multiple research firms, starting Q3 last year, our smartphone market share in India has become number one. Also, with Indonesia representing Southeast Asia, Russia representing Eastern Europe, and Spain representing Western Europe, all our markets have shown strong growth.

  1. Bumper crop of design awards

Good design is a key part of the user experience, and right from the start, it has been an important focus for Xiaomi. In fact, two of our co-founders come from a background of industrial design and have extensive experience in the field. Our ongoing investment in design was greatly recognized in 2017 when we received a host of design awards, including four major awards (IDEA Gold, iF Gold, Red Dot Best of the Best, Good Design Best 100). Led by Mi MIX and Mi MIX 2, five Xiaomi smartphones bagged international design awards. The Mi MIX series was even displayed as exhibits by a range of top museums including Centre Pompidou in France, Finland’s Design Museum and Germany’s Die Neue Sammlung.

Our success comes from the core of our business model: Winning the lasting trust of our users

Amidst the difficulties and challenges we faced, we still achieved amazing results. This victory is possible only because of the effort that our 18,000 employees have put in, the unrelenting support of our Mi Fans, and ultimately Xiaomi’s business model and values.

2017 holds a deeper meaning for us — alongside our miraculous comeback, doubts about our business model have been entirely crushed. Our business model has been thoroughly tested and we have gained a lot of confidence that we are on the right path, with the right values and the right culture.

We believe that rather than pursuing short-term gains in terms of hardware profit, making sure that our products have a good user experience will enable us to succeed in the long term. Instead of many layers in the distribution channel adding multiple costs to a product, honest pricing will win our users’ hearts. As long as we continue delivering products that are innovative, powerful, with high quality and great design, and with an honest price tag, we can win the lasting trust of our users.

And winning the lasting trust of our users is the most important thing to us. Some users have said that they can walk into a Xiaomi store, close their eyes and buy anything, because they are confident that our products offer the best quality and price. This is a really strong affirmation for us as this is exactly the ultimate goal we are pursuing. By continuing to win the trust of our users, our users will choose our products without thinking twice, and our highly efficient business model can be truly realized.

A new journey in 2018: Expanding around the world and staging a comeback in China

2018 marks the start of a new journey for Xiaomi, and it is bound to be a magnificent year. We have built a solid foundation over the last seven years, and we will ride on this momentum for greater expansion, growth and quality improvement.

While continuing to focus on technology innovation and quality improvement, we will also put in a lot of effort in our overseas expansion. In 2017, I went to India three times, Indonesia twice and Vietnam once, and I saw huge and exciting opportunities wherever I went.

We have entered more than 70 markets globally and established a leading position in many of them. But this is just a start. There is still a lot of room for growth in the markets we are present in, and we have yet to enter many more markets around the globe. Overseas markets represent huge opportunities for us and we need to give more support in terms of strategy, resources, and localized product development, as well as send more of our employees out to the rest of the world.

On the domestic front, we have to start a full counter-attack and accumulate small successes into a full victory, sparing no effort to ensure that we have the ultimate victory in 2019.

In 2018, the Chinese smartphone market is poised to experience a decline for the first time after more than a decade of growth. The market is consolidating while the competition  becomes more and more brutal. There is no turning back for us and we have to charge forward. The Chinese market is Xiaomi’s foundation. It is the biggest consumer electronics market in the world and the most competitive one. Only by winning in the domestic market  can we have enough support for global expansion. Only by winning in China, can we win in the rest of the world.

So this year I am setting a new goal: We will regain the #1 position in China within 10 quarters.

In this battle, we should move firmly forward and set up command center at the front line. We cannot afford to lose any province, city, county and community. We should remain brave and alert, and fight to the end.

This requires us to have strong management and organizational capabilities on all fronts. So from now on, we will nurture and promote a fleet of young and capable managers, creating a more dynamic and progressive team. We will make sure that capable, ambitious, aggressive and daring talent can learn how to fight and grow rapidly.

To everyone at Xiaomi, thank you all for your continued hard work! I hope you grasp all the opportunities in this great era and bravely shoulder your responsibilities. Let us embrace the great opportunities and challenges, and have the ambition to build a great business! Let us take on the mission of delivering innovation to everyone in the world, and write a new chapter in Xiaomi’s journey!

【News】Xiaomi announces Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus starting at RMB 799

Available in China starting 12 December, these feature-packed smartphones bring full screen display innovations to the sub-RMB 1000 category

BEIJING, 7 December 2017 — Global technology leader Xiaomi today brought its full screen display innovations to the sub-RMB 1000 category with the release of two smartphones—Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus.

With beautifully designed 18:9 screens with rounded display corners, these two models are powered by Qualcomm’s 14nm eight-core processors. They sport large pixel (1.25μm) sensors for the main camera, front Selfie-light, as well as long-lasting batteries. Priced from RMB 999, both versions will go on sale starting 12 December.

18:9 display with rounded corners

With 5.7-inch and 5.99-inch 18:9 displays that take up almost the entire front surface, Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus provide a much larger viewing area compared with traditional 16:9 screen displays. This gives a better user experience whether users are reading news, editing spreadsheets, or playing games on a smartphone.

In addition, Redmi 5/Redmi 5 Plus have screens with rounded display corners and are designed with close attention to symmetry, delivering a stunning appearance. They also feature a four-sided curved design that gives users amazing hand-feel.

Large 1.25μm pixels and front LED Selfie-light for natural, well-exposed photos

Redmi 5/Redmi 5 Plus come with rear cameras sporting large 1.25μm-pixel sensors. The larger the pixels, the more light a sensor can capture, giving better image quality even in situations when lighting conditions are not perfect.

The front Selfie-light on Redmi 5/Redmi 5 Plus allows users to capture beautiful selfies even in low-light conditions. With an always-on mode, this also works when shooting videos. Combined with Xiaomi’s Beautify 3.0, Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus deliver flattering and natural selfies.

Long battery life and MIUI 9 enhancements

Battery life is one of the most important features on the Redmi series, and Redmi 5/Redmi 5 Plus continue this tradition with a built-in 3300/4000 mAh battery. The power-efficient 14nm Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets, coupled with enhancements in MIUI 9, give Redmi 5 Plus a standby time of up to 17 days.

Flagship-level testing standards

Xiaomi’s Redmi series is widely recognized for high quality, a result of various factors including the use of best-in-class suppliers, and extremely stringent reliability tests comparable to those used for flagship devices.

One example of Xiaomi’s dedication to introducing the highest quality features on all its devices is a design tailored to buffer the impact of any fall in the new Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus smartphones. With a reinforced structure, the likelihood of a broken screen is reduced in cases when a user drops the smartphone, landing corner first.  Furthermore, enhancements to the earpiece, including an additional waterproof layer, help protect Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus from sweat and dust, reducing the likelihood of the call volume dropping over time.

Redmi 5 (2GB+16 GB) and Redmi 5 (3GB+32GB) will be available for RMB 799 and RMB 899 respectively. Redmi 5 Plus (3GB+32GB) will retail for RMB 999, and Redmi 5 Plus (4GB+64GB) for RMB 1299. They will be available in China on Mi.com, Mi Home stores, as well as Xiaomi’s flagship online stores on Tmall and JD.com starting 12 December.

Three Xiaomi products you need for a cozy winter

For many white collar workers who have to spend the most of their lives in an office building, a MUJI store that happens to be in the same building can be a perfect place to seek comfort. There, they can easily shop a wide variety of good quality and gracefully-designed items from stationery to household items and apparel.

As Xiaomi continues to grow in the mobile tech space, our founder and CEO Lei Jun has expressed an ambition to become the MUJI of the technology space, and also expressed interest in the company’s growth in the consumer goods sphere. We are a company that primarily focuses on technology products but also offers a variety of lifestyle products with minimalist designs tailored to consumers’ needs, and all made available at accessible prices.

With winter right around the corner, these three Xiaomi products are perfect for a cozy winter: Mi Smart Kettle, Mi Down Jacket and Mi Wool Gloves.

Mi Smart Kettle

Sipping a warm cup of coffee on a chilly winter morning is perhaps one of the best moments of the day. Our RMB 199 Mi Smart Kettle can make it even better with four key features:

Smart: Our kettle can be connected to the Mi Home app, so that users can set the desired temperature on their phones. The app offers several automatic modes, such as a 90 degree setting to brew green tea and a 50 degree setting for milk powder. Users can customize their kettle by pre-setting their preferred temperatures as well.

Boils fast: Thanks to the 1,800 W powerful heating ring at the bottom, the 1.5 liter kettle only takes five minutes to boil water. In contrast, other electric kettles take an average of 10-15 minutes to boil. The kettle’s liner, cap and temperature sensor are all made from a world-class 304 stainless material by POSCO, the South Korea based world leading iron and steel provider, offering a nontoxic, easy to wash and odorless product.

Safe: Thanks to its double-layered exterior material, even when the kettle liner reaches a temperature of 100 degrees, its surface still maintains a temperature of 40 degrees. Due to a hydraulic cylinder cushioning design, the cap opens slowly, so that users are not burned by boiling water vapor either. Our Mi Smart Kettle also has a patented power connector to prevent electric shock.

Mi Down Jacket

Our 90% white duck down jacket is both warm and extremely light, making it the ideal article of clothing for the traveling or working individual this winter. Made from Toray, the leading fibers & textiles technology company from Japan, this material has no pinholes so that feathers won’t escape.

After multiple tests and designs to consider, we have created a custom-fit jacket that is ideal to store while traveling and fashionable to sport on any occasion.

Mi Wool Gloves

For the businessman or millennial on-the-go, our RMB 49 Mi Wool Gloves allow you to continue typing an email or texting while keeping your hands warm. Using a conductive material on the fore finger, middle finger and thumb, the gloves mimic human touch and fit the hand snuggly, allowing accurate touch on the screen. Our Mi Wool Gloves embody a very simple and stylish design, coming in dark grey, dark blue and cream, a functional and attractive accessory for the winter.

These Xiaomi lifestyle products are designed to contribute to consumers‘ everyday lives, allowing them to be more efficient and further enjoy themselves while traveling, going to work or just relaxing at home this winter season.

Mi Electric Scooter paving the way for smart transportation

In 2011, Wang Ye, founder and CEO of Ninebot, was surprised at the number of electric scooters he saw when traveling to Southern Europe.

Wang Ye, founder and CEO of Ninebot

He realized that other than motorcycles and electric bikes, personal mobility devices have become a smart solution in highly congested urban areas.

Though motor and electric bikes have their own strengths, electric scooters beat them in at least two ways. First, electric scooters are lighter – normally weighing between 10-15 kg. Second, they are foldable and easy to maneuver in crowded cities.

In Europe, especially Southern and Western Europe, electric scooters are very popular, particularly because automobiles are restricted from entering downtown areas of many European cities.

Today, the market volume for electric scooters across the globe is 3 to 5 million units.

And a large part of this demand comes from China. In large Chinese metropolitans like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, electric scooters are more popular than in smaller cities and towns. The reasons are obvious: heavier traffic and a faster pace of life. Besides, motor bikes are forbidden in main areas in several large cities, while electric bikes are not as convenient as electric scooters.

Mi Electric Scooter

You’ve probably heard of Ninebot, because our popular self-balancing scooter was made by this company and carries its brand, but you might not know that this is also the portfolio company in Mi Ecosystem that’s behind our Mi Electric Scooter.

Ninebot is a Beijing-based company and  merged with Segway in 2015, the US-based, world-leading, personal mobility device maker in 2015. Xiaomi is one of the major investors of Ninebot.

Because of its experience and resources, Wang decided to further tap Xiaomi’s distribution network of leading suppliers in order to branch out further into the last-mile smart transportation industry.

Beautiful and smart

At that time, there were already many electric scooters in the market, but the Ninebot team wanted to make something unique.

“After a great deal of product research, we believe we’ve created something unique to the marketplace, blending award-winning style with superior performance that stands out among the competition,” said Wang.”

Wang said the goal of the Mi Electric Scooter was to be beautiful and smart. As Xiaomi’s Mi Ecosystem products have unique industrial design style and strict ID standards, the manufacturing team experimented multiple times to optimize the electric scooter’s design. The painting procedure alone had over 30 tests to achieve the right look. For these efforts, the product has received the coveted Best of the Best of the Red Dot Design Award and the Good Design Best 100 Award.

Practicality is also key to the Mi Electric scooter. To figure out the best riding experience, Ninebot bought 50-60 different types of electric scooters for research. As a result, its highly durable tires can ride for 5000 km, or 250 hours, for a continuous high speed of 20 km/hour. As the scooter’s tires do not come in a standard size, we equip all our global versions with one to two extra tires and tools for replacing.

Like other smart Mi Ecosystem products, Mi Electric Scooter can be remotely controlled by an app via Bluetooth. When it is paired with the app, users can track their average riding speed, distance of their latest ride, their cycling habits, as well as remaining power of the scooter.

With such developments in the transportation industry, we are optimistic about the future of mobility, as it becomes even more innovative and intuitive on the road, providing more possibilities to explore the world.

Top 4 Xiaomi Products to Transform the Way You Travel

While everyone gets excited for a relaxing vacation, no one looks forward to the most stressful aspect – travel. Utilizing innovative technologies and carefully attending to details, we have several products that can help alleviate some of the stresses and make the transition from bedroom to beach side more enjoyable.

90 Point Metal Luggage

One of the major innovated technologies on our 90 Point Metal Luggage should be its ultra-quiet 360 degree spinning wheels, specially made with silica gel and man-made elastic rubber, which is environmentally friendly and non-toxic. We carefully selected an independent China-based wheel manufacturer, known in the suitcase wheel industry for always willing to take challenges to make very demanding products. As a result, the wheels are very, very flexible. “Even a gentle breeze can make the wheels move,” as a user named “Alitaozitu” described on Xiaomi BBS. Besides, it makes little noise on smooth roads.

Another innovation comes from its design. Instead of the popular parallel groove structure of case shell and a design of vertical striped ribs, our suitcase has a large area of mirror-like surface with just a few horizontal striped ribs. That means, due to less ribs that consititue the exterior, we had to look for a sturdier and more elastic material. Though we were new to the suitcase market, we relentlessly explored ways to make innovation, as what we have done on crafting our smartphones. At last we ordered a higher labeled aluminum from Alcoa, the world’s leading aluminum provider. This aluminum provides a shock absorbing resistance and sustains color and sturdiness for a longer period of time. We were the first to use such a material and now Samsonite and Tumi also use the same material we’ve chosen, according to the product manager of our suitcase.

The luggage includes an adjustable drawbar to suit every height. We also designed a tilted surface for TSA customs locks, allowing users to easily unlock their suitcase without the extra hassle of rearranging items.

Our 90 Point Luggage also comes in Makrolon material versions sized in 20”, 24” and 28”, priced from RMB 299 to RMB 499.

Mi Power Bank

According to our statistics as far as 30 Sept 2016, we have sold over 55 million Mi Power Banks in the past three years.

Smartphones are the way we connect to our world, perhaps even more so when traveling, making battery life – or lack thereof – an important concern. The Mi Power Bank will provide the battery boost your phone needs any time, any place, and comes in three sizes: a normal size (10000mAh), a slim size (5000mAh) and a newly released super-size (20000mAh). When traveling, we recommend the normal size, as it easily fits inside any carry-on bag, or even a standard clutch purse.

Due to the dual-battery cell technology, the 10000 mAh allows for 2 full charges on the Mi Note, 3.5 full charges on the iPhone 6 and 1 full charge on an iPad Mini, the perfect amount to carry you over to your connecting flight or destination.

For the avid business traveler or family needing to charge multiple products while on the go, the Mi USB Charging Hub is a must-have. Available with either two or four ports, you won’t have to choose between charging your iPad or Power Bank.

8H Travel U-Shaped Pillow

While the market is cluttered with travel pillows, our 8H Travel U-Shaped Pillow rests above the others – unparalleled materials, including natural latex for the interior and slub cotton for the exterior, give it a pliable, breathable quality. The Travel U-Shaped Pillow can contour to any neck or waist, providing comfort in an otherwise cramped airplane seat.

The pillow comes in grey or beige and easily fits inside a standard carry-on luggage.

TS Polarized Sunglasses

With its classic Aviator style, our TS Polarized Sunglasses are a necessity when traveling and exploring new places.

Bearing a 20 micrometer anti-scratch coating—an innovated high technology material, lenses can automatically repair slight scratches in two seconds with a temperature between 73-77 degree Fahrenheit, and 30 seconds for temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The glasses are comprised of six layers, absorbing 99% of ultraviolet rays and protecting the sunglasses from moisture and air.

Designed with consumers’ needs in mind, we are glad to do our part to make travel less stressful and more enjoyable. Just as the design team of the 90 Point Metal Luggage said, “Design is for solving problems. Our goal is very simple – to make good products with attractive prices and to make innovation available for everyone.”

The making of Mi MIX: How the Philippe Starck collaboration was born

This September, Philippe Starck took the stage in Beijing for the launch of Mi MIX 2, the stunning full screen display smartphone. Starck joined forces with Xiaomi last year to revolutionize the smartphone industry with the original Mi MIX, the world’s first full screen display phone. But, the road to the renowned designer’s connection to us dates back to the end of 2014, when several Xiaomi products won a series of design awards. Starck was impressed that a brand from China – a country criticized at the time for lacking strong industrial designs – created such simple, neat, and impressive works.

In the spring of 2015, Starck was introduced by his friend to Xiaomi and experienced several products. He felt there was a common understanding with us on the design philosophy in terms of democratization for elegant and high technological designs.

How Mi MIX 1 started

With our founder and CEO Lei Jun‘s commission, Liu De, our vice president who leads Mi Ecosystem went to Spain in August 2015 to meet with Starck and showed him the Ceramic Edition Mi 5 Pro. Starck believed the device was a world-class product, and a manifestation of a shared vision: the simpler the design is, the more important the material.

Given the mindshare, Liu De let Starck in on the company’s plan to launch an all-new concept phone product line, which would become our most important project, to date, emphasizing the desire to create a product for which mass production was not a priority, and could simply focus on the possible forms of future phones.

By the end of the meeting, Starck accepted our invitation to lead the design of the project – taking a leap of faith to design a phone for the first time.

It took Starck only three days to develop the first design, followed by a year of fleshing out the ambitious concept.

Led by Starck, our engineers created a series of mockups and models, and frequently flew to France and Portugal for working sessions with Starck. Lei Jun also immersed himself in the manufacturing process and worked directly with engineers to solve structural and engineering challenges.

Mi MIX 1 had its pilot production in February 2016, which incorporated leading-edge features such as doing away with the earpiece speaker and the proximity sensor with piezoelectric ceramic technology and ultrasonic technology.

By August 2016, we finalized the design of Mi MIX 1. On October 26, we officially unveiled Mi MIX 1.

How Mi MIX 2 started

In November that year, the Mi MIX 2 project was officially started. Starck and Our ID, product and engineering teams had frequent and fast communication, from which they cleared the aspects to improve on Mi MIX 2, including:

  • Change the aspect ratio from 17:9 to 18:9, so that the on-screen content can take centerstage and is more pure, as well as more immersive.
  • Re-enable the diaphragm handset for a better call experience.
  • While keeping the high aspect ratio, slightly narrow the phone body so it can be thinner and have better handfeel.
  • Adhere to the ceramic material and apply a more integrated ceramic unibody design.

“We created the Unibody ceramic Mix 2 because the concept of full monolith fits with idea of fullness, completeness, and simpleness of the ancient China philosophy and the values of the next world. We tried to reach through the unibody a type of serenity. The purity of design of a ceramic unibody gives us the feeling of smooth perfection of jade, a quiet pure jade.” Ph.S

In less than two months, Starck proposed and updated more than a dozen ideas. Our engineering team began building a structure based on the design process and selection. All of our teams met in France and Portugal several times to discuss with Starck about the forward-looking technical solutions.

Then Starck came to Beijing on February 15 to meet Lei Jun and our teams to discuss the design and structure, technology and other issues.

The engineering model of the P0 version of Mi MIX 2 finally succeeded after months of experiments amidst the huge technological challenge of creating a ceramic unibody.

In early May 2017, Starck received the P1 prototype of the first Mi MIX 2.

“Looks like an evolution but it is a revolution. Revolution is the addition of powerful evolution.” Ph.S

“When Lei Jun introduced me the powerful performance of Mi MIX 2, I had the strong feeling that Lei Jun had just gave me the key, the possibility to create the ultimate best for all of us, for all the world.” Ph.S

In August 2017, Mi MIX won the IDEA Gold Award.

On September 11, Starck came to Beijing to attend the launch event of Mi MIX 2, which once again stunned the world.

“Because it’s fantastic, we cannot make better today. It’s done, we cannot go more forward now. It’s ultimate but so challenging to create the next revolution.” Ph.S
