Introducing Retractable Wide-aperture Lens Technology

In recent years, image quality has been a major focus of smartphone manufacturers. Drawing inspiration from traditional camera designs, Xiaomi introduced its latest self-developed, Retractable Wide-aperture Lens Technology. A retractable optical structure is designed to compactly lodge within the smartphone and can extend out when needed. This design allows the retractable telescopic camera to have a larger aperture to increase the amount of light input by 300%, as well as showcase better performance in portrait photography and night photography compared to currently-used camera structures. It also incorporates a new image stabilization technology that offers a larger anti-shake angle, making the images more stable, and increasing sharpness by 20%.

In particular, it was revealed that Xiaomi Smart Factory is now able to operate fully automatically 24/7 swiftly switching production lines every 20 minutes in order to improve efficiency.

Xiaomi Smart Factory boasts the industry’s first one-key calibration, line switch function, and is also the first to adopt the linear automatic product testing line with high flexibility. Xiaomi Share Development Framework

The key idea behind the Xiaomi Share’s Development Framework is to integrate a series of smart hardware and operating systems that come with different capabilities into a co-working network. So at MIDC 2020, Xiaomi also introduced the Xiaomi Share Development Framework with two function modules: Collaboration Kit and MiPay Kit. Developers will be able to use device collaboration and screencasting features on third-party devices, instead of only being limited to Xiaomi developed products and applications. Xiaomi Share Development Framework will continue to open up more function modules such as NFC Tap kit, Relay kit, FileShare kit for developers in the future.

Xiaomi Vela integrated IoT software platform and XiaoAi AI Assistant 5.0

With the introduction of Xiaomi Vela, an integrated IoT software platform, developers will be able to access a vast variety of software components and easy-to-use frameworks, which will further strengthen Xiaomi’s IoT foundation.

Xiaomi Vela offers four advantages: high cost-effectiveness, tailorability, code reusability, and high integrity. In the future, the platform will be the first to land on Xiaomi’s IoT module and realize support for most categories of smart home devices through it. At the same time, Xiaomi is developing the software framework and components needed to support applications such as smart speakers, smart bands, and smart watches, and will be gradually implementing them on other devices. The release of Xiaomi Vela will create more value for upstream chip manufacturers and downstream equipment manufacturers, preparing the ground for win-win cooperation.

Embracing open source

At the conference, Xiaomi also announced the official open sourcing of the MACE Micro microcontroller AI framework, allowing more AIoT devices to be equipped with high-performance AI capabilities. During last MIDC, he announced that the new generation of his open-source speech recognition toolkit, Kaldi, will support PyTorch and TensorFlow, and showcased the technical architecture of Kaldi for the first time: including k2 (core algorithm), Lhotse (for preparing training data), and Icefall (collection of sample scripts). Like the original Kaldi, the new generation of Kaldi will continue to support GPU training.

Beijing, CHINA, August 28 – Xiaomi announced that it will officially kick-start mass production of smartphones equipped with the 3rd Generation Under-Display Camera next year. This marks Xiaomi’s latest strategic step towards the high-end smartphone segment bolstered by the company’s continuous technological innovation.  

Xiaomi’s recently-released half-year earnings report demonstrated the company’s outstanding performance in the premium smartphone market. In the second quarter of 2020,  the average selling price (“ASP”) of the Group’s smartphones increased by 11.8% YoY. New flagships including Xiaomi’s Mi 10 series and the newly-launched Mi 10 Ultra took the lead and solidified the brand’s position in the high-end market. 

In overseas markets, shipments of Xiaomi’s premium smartphones priced at €300 or above went up by 99.2% YoY in the second quarter of 2020. According to Canalys, Xiaomi’s smartphone shipments in Europe grew by 64.9% YoY in the same period with the company seizing a total market share of 16.8% and ranking top three in the market for the first time. In Western Europe, the Group’s smartphone shipments grew by 115.9% YoY, granting Xiaomi a 12.4% market share.

Xiaomi’s high-end product strategy stems from its technological achievements. Shortly after launching the first mass-produced 120W graphene battery on Mi 10 Ultra, on August 28th Xiaomi introduced another ground-breaking technology with mass production potential – the 3rd Generation Under-screen Camera Technology. Compared with other common solutions on the market, Xiaomi has doubled the number of horizontal and vertical pixels, achieving the same pixel density above the camera as on the rest of the display area. Thus, the area above the integrated camera demonstrates the same brightness, color gamut and color accuracy as the rest of the display.

Building on a legacy of innovation in charging technologies, Mi 10 Ultra sets an industry first by introducing the latest generation of Mi Turbo Charge supporting 120W wired charging, 50W wireless charging and 10W reverse wireless charging. 

Mi 10 Ultra is the first mass-produced smartphone equipped with 120W wired fast charging. The device adopts multi-stage step-variable current control technology, supporting three charging modes such as double-pump charging, direct charging and normal charging. It connects two 98.5% ultra-high conversion efficiency charge pumps which greatly decreases the amount of power lost during the conversion process and increases charge efficiency, while preventing overheating and extending high-power charge time. Discover Mi: How AIoT Turns Listening into Hearing

Numerous technological advancements have propelled true wireless (TWS) headsets to steal market share from traditional Bluetooth and wired headphones in recent years. According to Canalys, TWS headsets have overtaken wireless earphones and wireless headphones as the largest category with a stellar 183% year-on-year growth in Q3 2019. To find out more about the latest trends in the field and Xiaomi’s vision for the future of TWS earpieces, we sat down with people who were in the vanguard of the company’s ecosystem efforts as well as senior decision-makers from 1MORE, the Xiaomi ecosystem company behind Mi Earphones.

User-centered design and continuous progress

Sharing Xiaomi’s brand philosophy, companies like 1MORE, are committed to the cause of making advanced technology accessible to everyone, a commitment out of which Xiaomi’s very first offering to audiophiles, four-unit wired Mi In-ear Headphones Pro, was born. 

“From Mi In-ear Headphones Pro to the recent Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 Basic, we have made our best to improve every aspect of the product from noise cancellation to pro-level sound quality, battery life and more,” explained Channing Zhang, General Manager, VP, and Partner at 1MORE Group. “We have made considerable strides in terms of providing users with a low latency audio experience without sacrificing sound quality. Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 Basic incorporate a 14.2mm large driver for more natural sound and support high quality AAC audio decoding.”

“We contemplated every design feature, material, surface treatment, and color with Xiaomi and had to restart the process several times. In order to make sure that the earphones are comfortable to wear, we analyzed thousands of ear canal data samples in the laboratory and collected feedback from consumers. To improve call sound quality and allow our products to rival high-end competitors we systematically optimized our chips, design, and noise reduction algorithms,” added Kevin Hu, Product Director at 1MORE Group.

Our designs for casual users, sports lovers, and mobile game enthusiasts have received compliments from the Mi Fan community and beyond. Technology for all

“Price and performance are currently among the few reasons preventing users from switching to TWS devices. However, as technology breakthroughs in this segment proliferate, we are confident in our ability to make quality TWS devices accessible to everyone,” shared Channing Zhang. “Currently, there are still certain scenarios under which TWS headsets can be inferior to their wired brethren, high FPS gaming that requires low latency audio is one of them. Yet in the near future, we believe, TWS devices will be able to showcase similar performance and will even outpace wired headphones on multiple fronts.”

Product innovation and the future of TWS devices

“By incorporating location, movement and health detection sensors, voiceprint recognition and other advanced features, TWS earphones could become the key to any smart home. They will transform into the ultimate personal wearable devices, allowing users to study, exercise, or rest more efficiently,” Zhang continued.

Xiaomi announces the latest iteration to its Wearable technology series – Mi Smart Band 5

Beijing, CHINA, June 11, 2020 – Global technology leader Xiaomi today introduced the latest and long-anticipated Mi Smart Band 5 to its stellar wearables product line. Offering a host of upgrades from its predecessor, Mi Smart Band 5 boasts a larger 1.1-inch AMOLED dynamic display, improved fitness tracking accuracy, women’s health tracking, stress assessment, remote shutter control, and more. With 8 colorful straps and hundreds of themes, everyone can express a unique personality with Mi Smart Band 5.

Powering these newly added features is the battery on Mi Smart Band 5 that supports up to 14 days* of continuous usage. Mi Smart Band 5 is also perfectly compatible with both Android and iOS platforms, providing wearers with a seamless user experience. 

Upgraded large dynamic display, multiple color straps and themes for customization 

As Xiaomi’s first smart wearable products to support dynamic home screen feature, Mi Smart Band 5 comes with a stunning 1.1-inch large AMOLED display, marking a 20% increase in terms of screen size compared to its predecessor. Navigating life has never been made easier with extra space for news feeds, notifications, and more. Coming with a maximum brightness of 450 nit and five adjustable brightness levels, Mi Smart Band 5 ensures crystal clear viewing experience, even in back lit situations. It also comes with a 2.5D tempered glass panel that protects the screen from scratches and abrasions. 

Adopting a TPU material which is certified by GB/T 26572-2011 certification and is also Europe RoHS compliant, the strap of Mi Smart Band 5 is soft, smooth, and safe to wear. More precise 24-hour health monitoring, includes tracking of menstrual cycles

 Mi Smart Band 5 is equipped with a high performance PPG heart rate sensor. The heart rate monitoring algorithm has been further optimized to support the 24-hour heart rate monitoring function. Hence, data monitoring is more accurate than the previous Mi Smart Band generations. Sleep monitoring accuracy feature is improved by 40% and the heart rate monitoring of irregular movements boasts up to 50% improvement. 

On top of many performance improvements, Mi Smart Band 5 also introduces more health-related features. In terms of sleep monitoring, irregular and sporadic sleep patterns, and rapid eye movement monitoring features have been added. So even your lunch break naps can now be recorded as actual sleep data. Mi Smart Band 5 calculates heart rate variability and respiratory information during sleep, providing analytics reports to give users more detailed information on their sleeping cycles.  

In modern life, many people face sub-optimal health issues. The Mi Smart Band 5 has a built-in PAI Activity Index, which allows you to calculate the levels of your heart rate using a specific algorithm and can provide users with helpful information to aid in exercises and workouts. 

Mi Smart Band 5 offers other unique health tracking functions. First, a menstrual cycle prediction function paired with a vibration alert for female users. The latest versions are: Mi Browser/Mi Browser Pro (v12.1.4), and Mint Browser (v3.4.3).

These software updates include an option in incognito mode for all users of both browsers to switch on/off the aggregated data collection.

Xiaomi has reviewed a recent article by Forbes on our privacy policies and believes the reporting to be misrepresentative of the facts. At Xiaomi, our users’ privacy and security are of top priority. We strictly follow and are fully compliant with user privacy protection laws and regulations in the countries and regions we operate in. In light of the misrepresentations, we would like to clarify the following:

1. In all global markets where Xiaomi is officially present, in order to offer the best possible user experience, increase compatibility between the operating system and various apps, as well as undertake the obligation of protecting user privacy, all collected usage data is based on permission and consent given explicitly by our users. Additionally, we ensure the whole process is anonymous and encrypted. The collection of aggregated usage statistics data is used for internal analysis, and we do not link any personally identifiable information to any of this data. Furthermore, this is a common solution adopted by internet companies around the world to improve the overall user experience of various products, while safeguarding user privacy and data security.

2. Xiaomi hosts information on a public cloud infrastructure that is common and well known in the industry. All information from our overseas services and users is stored on servers in various overseas markets where local user privacy protection laws and regulations are strictly followed and with which we fully comply.

3. Prior to publication, the reporter emailed us with questions relevant to the article and Xiaomi responded with full transparency, providing detailed answers regarding our technology and privacy policies. We believe the article published does not accurately reflect the content and facts of these communications. After the article was posted, we contacted the reporter with further clarification and are currently in discussion with the intention of swiftly reassuring him with how our data security works in action. In parallel, we created a live post on Xiaomi’s official blog to share this same information with the public. Xiaomi was disappointed to read the recent article from Forbes. We feel they have misunderstood what we communicated regarding our data privacy principles and policy. Our user’s privacy and internet security is of top priority at Xiaomi; we are confident that we strictly follow and are fully compliant with local laws and regulations. We have reached out to Forbes to offer clarity on this unfortunate misinterpretation.”


The following provides detail on how Xiaomi collects data and protects user privacy:

There are two types of data collection:

1. Collection of aggregated usage statistics data – Data (such as system information, preferences, user interface feature usage, responsiveness, performance, memory usage, and crash reports) is aggregated and cannot alone be used to identify any individual.

An example of usage scenario: The URL is collected to identify web pages which load slowly; this gives us insight into how to best improve overall browsing performance.

2. Syncing of user browsing data – An individual’s user browsing data (history) is synced when:

  • The user is signed in on Mi Account; and
  • The data sync function is set to “On” under Settings

An example of usage scenario: To provide users quick access to previously viewed websites when users switch between different devices after logging in to their Mi Accounts.

Under incognito mode, user browsing data is not synced, however, aggregate usage statistics data (mentioned in point 1 above) is still collected.

Below are screenshots to further demonstrate these points. 

  1. This screenshot shows the code for how we create randomly generated unique tokens to append to aggregate usage statistics; and these tokens do not correspond to any individuals.

  2. This screenshot shows how the Mi Browser works under incognito mode, where no user browsing data will be synced.

  3. The following URL shows that the collected usage statistics data is stored on Xiaomi’s domain and we do not pass any data to Sensor Analytics. (MIUI is the operating system of Xiaomi’s devices).
  4. This image shows that usage statistic data is transferred with HTTPS protocol of TLS 1.2 encryption.

Below are four certifications Xiaomi received from widely acclaimed international third-party companies and organizations – TrustArc and British Standard Institution (BSI) – which have certified the security and privacy practices of Xiaomi’s smartphone and its default apps, including Mi Browser.

ISO 27001 is a widely accepted and applied international certification standard for information security management system. This certification indicates that Xiaomi has implemented internationally recognized information security control measures defined in this standard.


ISO 27018 is an international code of conduct that focus on personal data protection on cloud. This certification indicates that Xiaomi Cloud has a complete system for the protection of personal data.


ISO/IEC 29151:2017 is an internationally recognized guide for the personal identity information protection. This certification proves Xiaomi’s capabilities of information security guarantee and privacy data protection.


TrustTe enterprise privacy certification standards have combined the privacy compliance requirements of countries. This certification shows that Xiaomi has established a complete privacy compliance system and obtained internationally recognized privacy data protection capabilities.
